Vol. 2: Hayley Elliott

My name is Hayley, I am a mother, free thinker, owner of a small ethical plant-based activewear brand called Purusha People. I love good homemade food made with love, children, anything outdoors, yoga, and being at home with my family :) I dislike inauthentic people, plastic, driving and cars in general haha!

What is your morning routine?

Because I have two small children, a four-year-old and a four-month-old, it’s difficult to have a consistent routine every morning because each day is very different with them. Also being an entrepreneur my days look very different from one day to the next. I typically wake up between 7 and 8 AM, make the bed always, nurse one or both of my children for a little while, let the dog out, put a kettle of water on the stove for tea, start making breakfast. Breakfast is usually cereal with lots of fruit, a bagel, or eggs and fruit and toast :) I love mornings and feeling like there is a whole day ahead to get things done.

How do you typically travel?

I don’t! I just dyed my hair myself the other day and there are some bad looking spots, and my partner Patrick was like, who cares, no one ever sees you. It’s true, with running a business from home and having little kids, I barely leave the house. I actually prefer it this way because I’m a homebody. I can probably count on one hand the amount I’ve driven our car in the past 6 months.

What are your typical lunch and snacks?

Lunch is usually sardines with kale and a tortilla or a giant salad with beans and goat cheese. I don’t really snack because my 3 meals are so massive ha!

Are there any other sustainable habits you have on a normal day?

Well, I don’t drive so that helps! I post almost everyday on social media about sustainability and zero waste ideas, I eat local foods from our local health food store, I shower probably twice a week to save water, I always make sure to spend at least an hour outside walking, running, or playing and enjoying nature.

What is your typical dinner and night time routine before climbing into bed?

Dinner varies a lot! Lots of pasta, tofu stir fry, burgers from our local farm Laurel Ridge (Litchfield, CT), recently roasted carrots, potatoes, and parsnips. We usually watch an episode of Friends while eating. Bedtime is a bath on occasion with the kids, playing in the playroom for about a half hour, trying to brush everyone’s teeth (my dog included haha!), reading books in bed, more nursing, falling asleep around 9. We all sleep in one bed, so after they fall asleep I usually do some work on my phone, catching up on emails, posting on social media, and then reading a book on my Kindle. I’m currently reading Vaccine Nation by Elena Conis, pretty much the only book I could find that was not biased on one side or the other. I fall asleep around 10:30.
