Vol. 1: Alex Eaves
First, a little intro. If I had to sum myself up in a sentence, I'd say that I'm a reuse expert who likes to stay positive, eat plant based food, drinks a lot of coffee and lives in a 98 square foot tiny house. More elaborately, I'm the director of the documentary, REUSE! Because You Can't Recycle The Planet. and creator and owner of the reuse apparel brand, STAY VOCAL. I also love skateboarding, playing Scrabble and traveling. What do I not like? Negativity and waste in any form: resources, money, time, food, etc.
What is your morning routine? Living in my tiny house, my morning routine is pretty similar. First off, contrary to a question I get all the time, no I don't hit my head when my alarm goes off, even though my bed is pretty close to the ceiling. After climbing down from my bunk, I wake up and do a stretching routine. I've been skateboarding for 30 years, so I like to keep pretty loose. Stretching in 98 square feet can be tough, but it's all about getting creative. After stretching, I make my fancy oatmeal concoction (a recipe I originally got from Alicia Silverstone's cookbook, "Kind Diet") and I read a book while I'm eating. Currently, I'm reading John Steinbeck's Travels With Charley again. It's about Steinbeck's journey around the U.S. in a truck with a camper built on it. I know a little bit about that life. After eating, it's Coffee Round 1 and depending on my mood, the weather and my schedule, I either sit and work in the truck or go to a coffee shop. Currently, I'm at a coffee shop, so I'm more focused to do things like this interview.
How do you typically travel? When I'm traveling around the country, I'm fortunate to be like a turtle and able to take my house with me. The REUSE! Box Truck has been such a great addition to traveling. I don't have to think about what to pack! And since it is more importantly a mobile reuse education center, my commute to work is just a matter of inches! When I travel I also take my bicycle, skateboard and my feet with me for local commuting, as the box truck is not the greatest commuter vehicle. When the truck is parked in Massachusetts, I have my normal car (a 2007 Pontiac Vibe), in addition to those other local methods.

What is your typical lunch and snacks? Being on a budget and being an efficient shopper, my lunch is almost always the same when I'm at home: Peanut Butter, a banana and some kind of fruit; typically a pear or Kiwi. Throughout the day, my snacks are typically cereal (Nature's Path selection is amazing), crackers, or chips like Pringles. I purposely buy snacks with packaging that can be reused. STAY VOCAL T-Shirt orders are shipped out in cereal boxes, cracker boxes or Pringles cans. It's crazy that Pringles and the healthier versions of them are the only potato chip brands that come in packaging that can be easily reused or recycled. So while I love chips, I avoid buying them. I tend to get my weekly fill with Tortilla chips at Mexican restaurants.
Are there any other sustainable habits you do on a normal day? I'm like a G.I. Joe guy with my Reuse accessories kit. I carry around a reusable bag with a tupperware container, silverware, glass bottle for water and of course my travel coffee mug. At the time of this writing, this is my 4281st day in a row without using a disposable coffee cup. Yep, over 11 years. Bringing our own travel mug or using a ceramic mug at a coffee shop is one of the easiest things that we can do to avoid trash, save resources and save money.
In addition to reusing, some other sustainable aspects of my life are:
I typically shower only every other day, unless I'm skateboarding.
My tiny house runs off only 1 standard electrical outlet.
Use a composting toilet in the tiny house, which saves a lot of water and is a great way to compost coffee grounds and food scraps.
Share reuse solutions via my numerous Facebook and Instagram pages
Do speaking engagements, screenings of the film and tours of the REUSE! Box Truck
What is your typical dinner and night time routine before climbing into bed? People don't live in a tiny house to stay in a tiny house 24 hours a day. That said, I usually eat dinner outside of the house and many times it's a burrito. I eat burritos a lot because (spoiler, it's related to waste) of the minimal packaging. Most places wrap a burrito in tinfoil, which can easily be recycled. And I bring in my reusable bag with all of the other accessories that I need. I also cook and eat at other people's houses a lot, so I can spend time with friends and family. After dinner, I "try to" wind down and relax with a good comedy TV show or documentary.
Anything else you'd like to mention? Every day, we are all faced with hundreds of decisions to make; from how we eat to how we dress to how we travel. For all of these decisions, I'm constantly striving to choose what's best for the future of our planet. That's why I'm a passionate reuser, eat and live a vegan lifestyle and keep things minimalistic. The more we do, the more we can make this world a better place.
